The women’s basketball team holds a 16-3 record with the help of key player, sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher, who received another award from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

Kelliher has been putting up great numbers in each game, playing a strong contribution in receiving her third GLVC Player of the Week award for the week of Jan. 29. This is the fifth time in Kelliher’s career that she has won the award.

Additionally, Kelliher has the team-best average of 20.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She has a 70 percent average of shooting from the field.

“I just try to do everything I can to help our team win,” said Kelliher.  Being a team player is a great asset that Kelliher brings to the Flyers.

Playing against McKendree University and University of Illinois-Springfield, Kelliher averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, shooting 78.3 percent from the field.

“Jess had another phenomenal week,” head coach Kristen Gillespie said. «She continues to find ways to positively impact our team.”

The Flyers won both games at home and have improved their conference record to 8-3, 16-5 overall this season.

“I think we just did a good job of communicating with one another and trusting each other,” said Kelliher.

“Ultimately our energy ended up helping us a lot in the end.”

Kelliher was an asset to the team, but she was not the only player who sparked great numbers in the games.

Redshirt senior Jamie Johnson added 13 points against McKendree and followed up with 16 points against UIS. Freshman forward Rachel Hinders totaled 12 points against UIS, helping to contribute to the team win.

Lewis returns to play on Feb. 9 in the Neil Carey Arena as they take on Truman State in their final home weekend.
